Dancing with Spirits

I was lucky to catch this scene this morning. The sun was burning the mist off the fields.
This particular field is where the ancient cave is situated. The story attached to the cave inspired me to write my first novel Dancing with Spirits.

The entrance to the ancient cave that inspired my book.

About Dancing with Spirits
A love story that spans the centuries. The story begins prehistory at a settlement in Rugeley, Cannock Chase. A young girl, Elvaennia, goes in search of her missing lover. By a freak accident she finds herself in the 21st Century, and quickly discovers her 'lost love' has also time travelled to this century. Determined to find him, she sets out on a journey that leads her to discover that her family back at the settlement face great danger, and she determines to help them. This in turn leads her into the celebrity limelight. She realises that tough decisions will have to be made. Will the temptations of the 21st Century prove too much for Elvaennia and Deimuiss, or will the old ways and values lead them back to the settlement?

What inspired me to write The Other Place Plus video introduction

For many years, I suffered from claustrophobia that affected my life in many ways. I disliked being in a room without a window being open or the door being slightly ajar. Lifts were out; I would walk up a thousand steps rather than travel in one The fear of being trapped was very real.
Over the years my fear grew, and after being involved in a car accident my fears increased. I found travelling in a car became frightening unless I had a window open. Travelling by public transport became a huge no. I could not open a window or a door due to automatic locking systems.
I remember once when we were out and about my husband popped into a shop while I waited in the car. For some reason he forgot and locked the car from a distance. I nearly passed out and had a panic attack. How embarrassing it is living with this phobia.
If we booked theatre tickets or went to the cinema, I always had to sit near an exit and at the end of the row. If not I didn't go. There were many places over years that I stopped visiting. It was easier to refuse invitations than admit to my phobia. The feeling of being trapped is very real to people who suffer from claustrophobia.
One night I was thinking about writing another book when I thought why not write about a girl who suffers from claustrophobia. Suddenly Chrissie and Babs came into my mind, followed by the rest of their family.
The story more or less wrote itself; Chrissie suffered from claustrophobia because of something that happened to her when she was a child. Chrissie's story in no way reflects my story. Her story is a world away from my life. My phobia was the stepping stone into her life.
I found it helped me to write Chrissie's story. Helpful because I began to understand more about claustrophobia. I was truly amazed at just how many people suffer from it, and I discovered there is a lot of help for sufferers.

A few reader comments

  • A lovely book. I'm glad I put it aside (although I effectively read most of it twice) and restarted it from the beginning when I had the time to enjoy it properly. It's easy and compelling to read but the story is deceptively complex and it's well worth scheduling it for when you can really concentrate and get into it.

This book is well worth a look for the sheer originality and compassion the author shows in her writing and in her characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I felt drawn in and invited into a lovely story with emotional twists, supernatural wonder and family values. I love the way the author cleverly dips the characters in and out a past life. The story really flows. I found this an unusual plot and very good, especially the ending. The Other Place is a very special place.

A few things nobody knows about me.

Here's a few things I dislike.
It's best to get the negatives out of the way first.
People who make false promises. By this I mean people who promise to do something for you and 'forget'. 'Sure,' I hear you say, 'people can forget,' Yes, I know they can and do. But you get to know the ones who frequently promise to do something for you and don't. You quickly realise that they rarely if ever follow through on their promises.
I dislike mushrooms. Fatty food is not for me. Spicy food leaves me cold, actually it makes me ill. I can't touch it..
The smell that wafts out of pubs makes me feel ill. Not that I have anything against pubs at all. They're great places for people to meet and socialise. I worked in a pub years ago, the smell never bothered me then. I find it strange that I now have to rush past them.
People who let their dogs run wild and refuse to put them on a lead when you're out walking. In particular when there are signs saying, 'Keep you dogs on a lead at all times'. I've seen people stand next to the sign and release their dogs. I can't believe there are that many illiterate people around.

Things I like.
Walking in the woods at twilight, this can be a magical time. Particularly when you leave the woods behind and see the sun slipping away for the night.
Seeing the first signs of spring. The first snowdrop, crocus, daffodil. I've seen all these, and this morning I saw the first butterfly of the year - it was an adult yellow Brimstone, and I was also fortunate this morning to see the first bee, and frog of the year. The frog was crossing the path we were walking along. We made certain he reached the other side of the road safely.

Good news. We don't get enough of it lately so when we see or hear any it's great.
Meeting up with an old friend. This happened to me this week and it was lovely to catch up.

Reading a good book.

I'm not keen on watching the television - apart from Time Team. I do enjoy watching this series. It's so interesting to see what they dig up.

One of my favourite singers is Rod Stewart his recent album is one of his best. I also admire Abba, Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy. Lionel Richie and Neil Diamond are great singers as well.

It's the small things in life that give us the greatest happiness. Not materialistic things.
A hug, a cuddle, a peck on the cheek. Someone who makes you feel wanted without asking anything in return, is a true friend. These things are so important and add so much to the quality of our lives.
